Doctor Who - Death in Heaven Review
RATED "S" FOR SOME-SUPER-SPOILERS, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
The second part and finale for the eight season of Doctor Who just came. I can't believe it, it was yesterday when they released "Deep Breath" and now this season just ended!
The episode follows up right after the events of "Dark Water", Missy is revealed as The Master and she's the one who's controlling the Cybermen to dominate the planet but they're interrupted by UNIT and capture Missy and the Doctor with sleeping darts. Meanwhile, Clara has its own problems, she's trying to convice some cybermen that she's actually the Doctor and the person known as Clara Oswald has never existed, then we see how the death bodies from all over the world start being upgrated to Cybermen, including Danny Pink's.
Back to the Doctor's plot, he's taken in an airplane with Missy as a prisioner and that's where he discovers he has been promoted as "The President of the World" for emergency cases (that's a cool rank if you think about it). Then, after Missy escapes by herself (a great scene!) and makes
the plane explode, the Doctor is seen falling down the sky but saved by the Tardis while "flying".
Back to Clara, she's taken to a cemetery by Danny the Cyberman and asks her to connect him so he can stop his feelings and become one of them, she wants to end with his suffering but the Doctor appears and stops her telling if she does that, Danny will be dead forever but that doesn't stop her and she finally "connects" him.
Then Missy appears again and shows how she can now control all the cybermen of the world with a simple bracelet and then the most unexpected thing happens, she gives the bracelet to the Doctor claiming it's a birthday present while telling him today was his birthday.
The Doctor is speechless while Missy tells him that's what he always wanted, to have an army and fix everything claiming he always wanted to be a good man and now its his chance. Then he discovers the truth about himself and what he does (being an idiot with a screwdriver and a blue box, those are his exact words) then he gives the bracelet to Danny who's still himself and orders all cybermen to destroy the dark cloud and all themselves.
Once the horror is over, Clara almost kills Missy and we discover that Gallifrey is save somewhere in the universe and she knows where it is, she gives the coordinates to the Doctor and "disappears".
After that, we see the Doctor going to those coordinates but discovering she was actually lying, nothing's there causing him to become angry and hitting the Tardis console with his fists. Clara then gets a surprise visit from Danny in the underworld (I think?) and he sends her the young boy who killed when he was a soldier and asks her to find his family. Clara decides to stop going with the Doctor but he thinks its because Danny went back and they're living together, she doesn't tell him the truth. He also lies to her claiming he found Gallifrey and he's going to spend his life there...
This has been the darkest Doctor Who episode I remember, so many deaths and intense scenes. We see some familiar faces from "The Day of the Doctor" and the new Cybermen whom look a lot like a mix between the one we all know and Iron Man's suite.
The highlight from this episode were, just like the last one, the scenes between the Doctor and Missy, they have a great chemistry and I cannot stop loving Michelle Gomez as the Mistress (we have to get use to it!), she's amazing and I really hope she shows up again in the future! One of those scenes was the ending, when she tells the Doctor Gallifrey's coordinates and the one in the plane claiming she was the one who gave Clara his phone number back in Matt Smith's era. The last words to Missy were "You win" claiming that she has been under control the whole series.
The ending was also very unpredictable with the surprise "birthday gift" to the Doctor by Missy and her whole plan to become friends again. It has been also a sad ending as we may see the last from Clara and Danny after his sacrifice and second death. (Updated: Ok, it seems like both Clara and Danny are confirmed for the Christmas special, so we'll see more from them!) I have to share that I got some tears in my eye while watching it...
This is an epic conclusion to an epic season, Peter Capaldi has shown the world he's the greatest Doctor ever with a darker and scarier tone with the character typical nonsense and foolishness but with his serious and menace personality. I really can't wait for the Christmas Special where we'll see Santa Claus (played by the great Nick Frost) and next season!
Also the rest of the cast has been amazing; Michelle Gomez, again, is amazing as Missy aka. The Master and Clara hass been brilliant but there has been too many scenes from her making the Doctor feel like in second place but this wasn't the case in this episode, he has been more like the principal one.
Quote of the episode: It has to be two, too many good ones to choose...
"Thank you. Thank you so much. I really didn’t know. I wasn’t sure. You lose sight sometimes. Thank you! I am not a good man! And I’m not a bad man. I am not a hero. And I’m definitely not a president. And, no, I’m not an officer. Do you know what I am? I… am… an idiot, with a box and a screwdriver. Passing through, helping out, learning. I don’t need an army, I never have, because I’ve got them. Always them. Because love, it’s not an emotion… love is a promise. And he will never hurt her."
"The Doctor: Why are you still alive?
Missy: You saved me.
The Doctor: I saved Gallifrey.
Missy: Yes, Gallifrey too, I suppose. There’s always collateral damage with you and me. It’s our Paris.
The Doctor: Gallifrey’s lost in another dimension.
Missy: Yes and no.
The Doctor: Meaning?
Missy: Yes, it’s in another dimension. No, it’s not lost.
The Doctor: You know where it is?
Missy: Yep. You know the best part about knowing? Not… telling… you!"
· The Best : Loved the entire episode specially the scenes between the Doctor and Missy. The ending was sad but unexpected, thrilling and scary!
· The Worst : Too many deaths from different characters and the wait for next season!
