Assassin's Creed Unity - Review
I'm a fan of Assassin's Creed Saga (I've played all games since the first one came out). But they have been lowering down the quality of their last games that I even didn't care about ending them. I remember playing the first Assassin's game and finishing it, while it was a little repetive, it had a great story. Then the second part came out, the start of Ezio's trilogy, a great game with different missions and a good plot making you play it until the very end. I loved Assassin's Creed II, I finished 100% and I even used to play it again to see if I missed something. Then Brotherhood and Revelations came out; they weren't as good as the II but still enjoyable, I finished them both but without going to far with the extra missions and stuff.
Then the third part came out with a new character and a new setting; Connor in the american revolutionary war. I even preordered the game before it came out but it ended up being a total disappointment, the gameplay was slower filled with glitches and I couldn't care less about the main character and his story, I returned the game without finishing it. After that huge let down, Black Flag came out, I got it and I'm glad I did it, while the story wasn't that amazing, the entire exploration with a pirate ship and the change to go different islands and explore was an amazing experience (I wish that was real!). Gameplay was the reason of coming back to the Caribbean BUT, as I said, the plot wasn't interesting at all, I didn't finish the main plot but I still have it in my collection.
Now, after 4 years of developing, the first Assassin's Creed game for the Next-Gen (they should start calling it current-gen) comes out called Unity (U for V for 5?). While the game is getting very bad reviews from the players I have to say I'm really enjoying the game, I have played around 10 hours and I'm having a blast. Yes, the game has its glitches (I haven't seen so many like other people have) but if you take those out, the game is one of the best ever done!
First off, the plot: Set in the French Revolution, your character is Arno Dorian, a man who is surrounded by death after his father is killed when he was a young boy and his step-father dies in his arms by a Templar. He discovers the truth about his real father, who was an Assassin, and his step father, who was a Templar. But that doesn't surprise his girlfriend/step-sister Elise who is also a Templar as her father and she says she will seek revenge. That puts Arno in a complicated situation where he has to choose between his loyalty to the Brotherhood or his love for Elise.
That's the plot, more or less, Arno investigates step by step about the murderer of his fathers while working with the Assassin's while his love towards Elise stops him to be an enemy of the Templars. Quite interesting, I still haven't finished it but it got me from the first minute and that hasn't happened since Assassin's Creed II. The main character is a very likeable character (he kinda reminds me to Ezio), the same goes to the rest of the cast especially Elise who is quite interesting and. while they do not fit like a couple, I must say their kiss scene is the most realistic one I've evern seen in a videogame!
While playing in this amazing recreation of Paris on scale 1:1 (for the first time in the franchise) it felt like a real city, with hundreds of people walking around; each of them was doing different stuff and sometimes stuff happens while walking around like a thief stealing something or a soldier trying to kill a rebel. Then there are the secondary missions called "Paris Stories" which they can differ from stealing something, helping someone, solving a murder case (one of the new things and personal favourite) or even killing. There are so many of these missions spotted on the map you'll ask yourself "Will I have enough time to do them all?", I've played more than twenty hours and I still have so many to do, and do not worry because there are so many they won't be too repetitive. There is, as always, chests and secrets to find around the gigantic map of Paris, that will take you some time to find them all. As for the main story, it will take you around 15 hours if you do them non-stop.
The gameplay is perhaps the most controversial thing in the game because it had so many bugs the first day it was released, now after the third patch, almost all of them have been fixed, but I must say I didn't spot so many as people say. Parkour is faster than ever, there are some glitches but it's because of the speed and the big size of the map (that's what I think...) and the exploration is infinite. I really don't know what to do while playing because there are so many things to do I cannot choose.
This has been the most mixed up Assassin's Creed ever because of the bugs and low scores it had but, for my opinion, is the one I'm enjoying most since AC II making the story enjoyable with a simple but nice love story and a huge upgrade of gameplay and secondary missions, endless hours of fun. For me, it's a tie with the great AC II, Arno is the new Ezio!
· Graphics (9.5/10) - Best graphics I've seen in a videogame so far! The design of characters is great and the city of Paris is amazingly well done! It would be a perfect 10 if it wasn't because so many glitches...
· Sound (9.5/10) - Great music, it fits perfectly as in every Assassin's Creed and good voice acting, the only bad thing is the accent, all the main characters have an english accent, that wouldn't be a problem if it was set in America or the U.K. but they could have tried a fake french accent...
· Gameplay (8.5/10) - Very fun and entertaining, you can spend hours and hours to do every little thing. The main story is intriguing (remembers to the acclaimed AC II) and the Paris Stories makes the game longer. Again, the bugs may make the game harder to play.
· Story (9/10) - A good Assassin's versus Templars story, forget about pirates and the american revolution, this is just about the brotherhood and that's a good thing. It may not take your breath away but it's a nice revenge story involving a love story with a Templar who looks for the same thing as Arno.
