Sherlock: The Sign of Three - Review
Spoilers? Of course there are!
This episode is nothing like the other ones from any seasons (including The Empty Hearse) but while I was afraid I was going to be disappointed in this change of wind I actually found it funny and interesting to watch.
Sherlock gets his worst case of all, become the best man at John Watson's weeding, what could possibly go wrong? While he tries to make the perfect speech with some funny and touching moments, he then explains two of his unsolved cases that will become connected somehow.
The first one is about the attempted murder in a "locked room" of a guardsman who asked Sherlock for help, after he infliltrates and discovers the crime, Sherlock doesn't know how the murderer did it, saying it's the most difficult locked room case he has ever had.
Then he starts explaining another case involving women who date a person who steals identities from deceased people. After explaining his deductions out loud, Sherlock discovers both cases are connected and there's going to be a murder at the wedding involving John's long-time friend and commanding officer.
This episode is, obviously, different from the others as its set entirely in Sherlock's speech as best man and explaining his cases watching flashbacks. While some people won't like it as it doesn't gets too serious and looks more like a parody, while the solution of the cases are easy, I actually found it interesting to see how three different cases are part of the same plan. The "locked room" case is the most thrilling while the "death person dating" is the most weird but fun to see.
Only Sherlock could know those cases are made by the same person as that one wants to become invited at John's weeding in order to murder his commanding officer, a war hero who recieves many death menaces. Sherlock gets that while explaning those cases during his speech, saves the life of the poor officer and discovers the one who was behind all. As I said before, too easy but interesting at the same time.
The acting is, as always, exceptional and the plot is very simple but very funny as well. This is by far the funniest episode from Sherlock ever. The entire speech is fun and touching, you'll laugh and cry at the same time. But what I found very enjoyable was to see, for the first time, Sherlock and Watson getting drunk and trying to "solve" a case, that scene was hilarious and while it doesn't fit to Sherlock, as he would never do something like that, it still was funny to watch and will watch it again as soon as I can!
What I really liked was the small cameo Lara Puvler had as Irene Adler...I didn't expect her to appear again in the series and while she did for a few seconds (in Sherlock's head) it made me remember how much I liked her!
I want to point out something different from the previous series that I haven't wrote before, the role of Sherlock's brother, Mycroft. While he clearly looks like he has a bigger role, it's not hard to see they are putting him a lot smarter than the detective. That's not out of character because it's the same way it was in the books but Sherlock still has the more deductive mode than his big brother. Another point about Mycroft, he sounds more against Sherlock than before, perhaps because he cares more about his friends and relationships and doesn't take the cases seriously but I won't be surprised Mycroft becomes a more antagonist character in the future...
This series has been always about cases but it seems they are taking it to a different way, a much funnier and more about Sherlock's relationships. I know the next episode will be like the old ones, some people aclaim it will be the darkest one and I'm happy to hear the series is going to its roots but I also enjoyed those different and funnier episodes.
· What I liked was without doubt all the comedy bits specially the entire drunk scene and the whole speech, including the funny and touching moments. To see Irene Adler again was amazing and reminded me how much I miss her...
· What I didn't like were the cases, like in the previous episode, while in this one they are much easier, they are also connected between them, something that hasn't been done in other episodes. The comedy is something people won't like but I actually found it different and worth it!
