Personal Opinion about "The Empty Hearse"
I did the review of the first episode of Sherlock in my last post but I want to extend it a little more with my opinion about the so long waited "resurrection" of the great detective.
Spoilers, obviously...
After two years of thinking how Sherlock faked his death so perfectly I'm quite disappointed in how they did it...it's obvious the three theories they explained in the episode are not the real one he did to survive the fall but I can't stop thinking that they (the writers) didn't know how to do it or which one to use as the official one. There has been lots of different theories, some of them were very imaginative while some others were just stupid but I want to share that the ones that appeared in the episode were the first ones I thought, here I explain them:
The first one I believed most is the one Sherlock explains to Anderson, that was my first theory two years ago after watching "The Reichenbach Fall", the squash ball to stop the heart, the method called "Lazarus" by Sherlock himself...this one looks the most reasonable and realistic from the others but it still doesn't fit perfectly there.
There were lots of theories in the internet and they used one of them which I found it was the funnier and less realistic of all...using a doll and throw it while Sherlock escapes with Moriarty, that's a joke from the writers without doubt. I remember someone told me that theory two years ago and I answered him "You are joking, righ?". I never believed he could do it like that as it would look too faked as well as the other theory quite good but not possible, the one Sherlock jumps and lands into the trash truck parked there for some seconds and they putted a corpse with a mask of Sherlock in the ground...as I said, it was a good theory but not possible to make as the truck was too far from Sherlock to land in there, it was too risky.
The other one they explained at the start of the episode was good too but too fake as well, too Hollywood-ish with Sherlock using a rope to avoid hitting the ground and going up again smashing a window and then having a moment with Molly kissing her very passionate. While doing all that using the body of Moriarty wearing him a mask (again) that looks too much like Sherlock and putting him in the ground...as I said, too Hollywood-ish.
They are using different theories from the internet to fill the episode and still not giving us the real one...as someone said in another webpage, it's a magic trick and the solution of it is a secret, you would never want to know how a magic trick is done as it loses its magic.
That's true and I don't need to know how he did it but I personally think the writers don't know it either, they had different ideas, different theories but they weren't sure which one to choose so, after all these two years, we are still left with the question without answer and I think we will never know, we only have the 14 different theories Sherlock says in the episode and the trick...it's amazing as a mystery but really a disappointment because, if they'd have show us how he did it, if they even know how he did it, they will be called genius.
After this I want to say the good thing about "The Empty Hearse" and that is the way Sherlock comes back to the lifes of his friends but especially with John Watson. That's what I was most intrigued actually all these years and they did it perfectly...he gets very angry but doesn't show it until a few minutes when he jumps to him and tries to punch him and then three times more later. Sherlock tries to be funny disguising as a waiter with glasses and a small fake moustache, I actually understand the reason why he wanted to do it in a funny way, so John wouldn't freak out in a harder way. While it doesn't suit him to be funny, everyone will laugh watching that scene. Gotta add that Martin Freeman shows his skills of acting in that scene as you can see in his eyes the angry and surprised feelings with a don't-know-what-to-do.
The acting is excellent as always, maybe better than the last two seasons but there's one thing that changes to worse, the plot. If you watched all episodes you should know there's always an interesting case going on but in this episode it doesn't exist as the main plot is about Sherlock coming back to his life and showing more of him...it seems they want to make him more human, more normal and I don't like that. I liked Sherlock Holmes for being the way he is, he doesn't like people, he only cares about his cases and nothing else but it seems they are trying to make him more likeable and I really hope they change this in the next episodes.
Don't get me wrong, I love this show, you can read my previous reviews from the last two seasons in the blog and you'll see all of them have high notes, but I hope it comes back to its roots...I think it will at least in the last episode of this season, "His Last Vow" as the main enemy will appear, he looks more bad-ass than Moriarty and I like that!
I only can watch the show a week after its released in the UK, so I have to wait until next monday to watch episode 2 and will post my review...

Doesn't it look enough funny? How about a new hat? |
