Sherlock: The Empty Hearse - Review
After two years since Sherlock faked his death and left our hearts empty and our minds doubted, he's back...was it worth it the wait? I'm still not sure.
This new episode starts with a version of Sherlock's fake fall explained by Anderson, who feels guilty after what happened to him and wants to think he's alive, that explanation was in the internet a few hours after the "Reichenbach Fall" was released but it looks way too surreal but, as Sherlock says himself in this new episode, there are 14 different ways he could have done it...and we get only three for now but still not sure if some of those are the real one. At the end of this episode, Sherlock explains how he did it to Anderson and, while its the most convicing and realistic, he still doesn't believe him as well as the viewers. So we may have to wait a little more to know the truth altrought it may never be known...
It starts two years after the events of Sherlock's death, his brother Mycroft is looking for him as they recieved a terrorist plot about a secret attack that's going to happen in London and they request Sherlock's intelligence to find about the plot. Once he's back at the city, he starts revealing himself to his "friends" and that includes to John Watson and his future wife, who recieves him in an angry way while Sherlock tried to say "Hi! I'm not death" in a funnier way you couldn't expect. The way John reacts is fantastic, very realistic and, after he punchs him a couple of times, he decides to go away without forgetting what he has done to him...he suffered a lot after the loss of his friend and feels betrayed after knowing many people knew he was still alive, I actually understand him...
Then Sherlock is officialy back taking different, small and "boring" cases one after another, even we'll see him taking a fake case where he finds a skeleton disguised and a book titled "How I did it" by Jack The Ripper. This scenes are just a way to pass time while Watson is angry at him but after he's kidnapped by the new enemy of the series and rescued in a very Hollywood way by his detective friend, he's back with him to resolve the main case of the episode...which main case you ask? The one of the terrorist plot, while it only appears at the start of the episode and at the end, that's the main case but the writers wanted to make this episode more about Sherlock and his relations with friends and family, we even have a small cameo of his parents played by Benedict Cumberbatch real parents!!
After they found out and resolve, very easily, the terrorist plot, Watson forgives him and life keeps going, I want to share I liked the reference of "V for Vendetta" about that terrorism act (Remember, remember, the 5th of November...) but this case was too easy and too predictable comparing it to other episodes. I would preffered to see more of the case when Sherlock saves John then he's kidnapped by his new arch-enemy Doctor Charles Augustus Magnussen (played by Lars Mikkelsen) who we can see him at the very ending of the episde for a few seconds, it's a shame because it would have been great if he was in the main plot and not the thing of the terrorism.
The cast does an excellent job as always, Benedict Cumberbatch is the perfect Holmes and Martin Freeman is the most realistic Watson I've ever seen! The rest of actors do a great job without exceptions, the actress who plays Mary, future's John wife, is a nice surprise! That's the high point of this show, the casting and acting is superb! Also a couple of cameos who you may not expect like Moriarty himself!
Some people may not like this new episode (or new season) as they are putting it in a different direction, more centered in Sherlock and his feelings with easier cases, and adding an extra of comedy, while that's a nice thing I really prefered the more serious tone from the last two seasons...
· What I liked was, by far, the entire casting and acting, all the actors do an excellent job plus seeing Benedict and Martin again once more is amazing!! The comedy is greater now and the mistery of how he faked his death is still out there, which I love! But the best of it was without doubt the part where Sherlock comes to John after all those two years thinking he was death, a very touching (and funny) scene...
· What I didn't like was the main case, it was way too easy and only takes some minutes in the episode, the rest is about Sherlock coming back and taking small cases, that's normal as he has been disappeared for two years but I want to see him taking important cases like in the last two seasons, I really wanted to see more of Lars Mikkelsen as he looks like he's going to be more bad-ass than Moriarty, can't wait to see what he has planned!!
