Captain America: Civil War - Review
:: Rated S.S. for "Super Spoilers - Read at your own risk ::
With many people fearing the actions of super heroes after the events of past movies like "Age of Ultron", the government decides to push for the Anti-Hero Registration Act, a law that limits a heroes actions. This results in a division in The Avengers. Iron Man stands with this Act, claiming that their actions must be kept in check otherwise cities will continue to be destroyed, but Captain America feels that saving the world is daring enough and that they cannot rely on the government to protect the world. This escalates into an all-out war between Team Iron Man (Iron Man, Black Panther, Vision, Black Widow, War Machine, and Spiderman) and Team Captain America (Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Falcon, Sharon Carter, Scarlett Witch, Hawkeye, and Ant Man) while a new villain emerges with a plan to destroy the Avengers from the inside with a horrible truth involving Tony Stark and the Winter Soldier.
It's a funny thing but we are having like four to five super-hero movies per YEAR but we can't still get enough. Marvel has been doing an excellent job giving us memorable and likeable characters in thrilling new and unexpected stories. It is hard to imagine, after so many movies, we are still asking for more. I absolutely love and enjoy these movies and I hope they never end but I expected the rest of peopl would be a little tired but after the impressive results of "Civil War", I am happy to say this is one of the greatest Marvel movies I've seen.
The movie is called "Captain America: Civil War" but it should have been called "Avengers: Civil War" or even "Avengers 2.5" as we get to see all our favourite characters together one more time. The entire cast is back, Chris Evans is great as Captain America, a loyal friend who cares for the innocents but this time he goes too far going against Tony Stark (aka Iron Man). We have seen Robert Downey Jr. as the multi millionaire genius in five other movies but this time he shines even more; his performance is brilliant as we get to see a different face from him, more vengeful, dark and angrier than ever. This time he only cares about what he thinks its right and will do anything to make that happen, literally anything, even fight his friends.
The old and new Avengers are back (with the exception of Thor and Hulk). The brothership between Cap and Bucky is stronger than ever, Steve is willing to do anything for his friend. We also get to see a more weird relationship between Vision and Scarlet Witch and some good scenes with Falcon and War Machine. Black Widow is back as good as ever, while she doesn't have role as important as she had in "The Winder Soldier" but some cool fightning scenes and funny moments especially the part she finally agrees with Tony at something.
Ant-man is back too and while he only shows up at the airport fight he's the funniest of them all thanks to his comedy skills and an unexpected surprise (I said spoilers!): he becomes Giant-Man!
We cannot make this review with no talking about the two new super-heroes joining the Avengers. First off there's Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), the new king of Wakanda after his father's death and guardian of his country. His fighting skills are amazing and stunts breathtaking. He's looking for revenge after the Winter's Soldier until he discovers the truth and shows us his kind and justice side. For now he looks too perfect with no weaknesses, we'll have to wait 'til his own movie in 2018...
One of the biggest surprises and most awaited revelations was the new Spider-man by the new actor Tom Holland. I was actually a little "tired" of all these Spidey's reboots but I have to say I'm very happy with this new one. He's finally in the Marvel Universe and they have done a great job in the casting. We have a younger Peter Parker that enjoys studying and looking for old technology in the trash...and, of course, saving people. Tony Starks finds him and, after flirting with his aunt May (hottest aunt yet), he joins on his side. His fighting skills are the same we have already seen in the previous movies but thanks to his smart-mouth and sacrastic comments makes him the greatest Spider-man we have seen. I actually can't wait to see what's in store for him in the next "Spider-man Homecoming" movie coming out next year!
The movie feels too political and slow (with a couple of good action scenes) at times thanks to the "Sokovia Accords" that makes the Avengers divide. The first half of the movie is all about arguments with Tony Stark and others trying to convice Captain Rogers to join that registration but always fail claiming he wants to act whenever he feels its right and not to wait for the goverment ask him to do it. While Cap's decision seems like the right choice, he goes too far to help his friend too. You can only feel sorry for Tony who only tries to do what feels right, even more after the shocking revelation at the end. It's actually hard to choose side, I kinda agree with both.
Then the second half starts filled with action and an epic fight between the now divided Avengers. Their confrontation at the airport is one of the most intense and fun fights I've ever seen. While it kinda looks simple in the pictures, the entire sequence is just perfect. All the superheroes we love and care have their moments. We have already seen them in previous works but this time they're fightning against each other, that's what makes it so memorable.
The last 40 minutes of the film are just action scenes and fights but they don't get boring or repetitive thanks to the unexpected moments and funny moments. While the "airport fight" between both sides is amazing, I have to say the final fight is just spectacular. Iron Man versus Captain America and the Winter Soldier, my heart was beating stronger than ever while watching that. After Tony Starks finds out his parents were killed by the Winter Soldier, his fury growns and tries to kill him but he's helped by Rogers. Unstoppable, he also confronts Captain America in one of the most intense fights I've ever seen.
While, at the end, Captain America wins the fight (I said spoilers), it's easy to see Iron Man could have won if it wasn't for the fact he was fightning against two people. It's clearly to see he just wants to kill Bucky, there are a couple of moments where Iron Man could have killed Captain America but he didn't just warning him to keep out of his way.
Now the Avengers are divided and that sounds amazing, what's in store for them? What will they do in the next movies? Will they join the group again to fight against Thanos? So many possibilities that keeps me wondering...
· What I liked most: Avengers 2.5 - The entire cast back - Robert Downey Jr.'s amazing performance! - Black Panther - Best Spider-man ever! - All action scenes are amazing and intense, especially the airport fight and final match!
· What I didn't like: The problem with the Marvel movies, no good villians (except Loki of course) - Too slow at the beginning - Too political.
"We are never getting tired of Marvel films. Civil War gives us what "Age of Ultron" should have. An intense story too political at times where the super hero team is divided from the inside and will fight against each other in the greatest action scenes I've seen in a while. Cannot wonder what's going to happen next. Civil War becomes easily one of the best super hero movies."
