Fallout 4 - Review
A great classic comesback, after some speculations about a possible sequel, Fallout 4 came to life last E3 revealing it was almost finished and releasing this year. Was the wait worth it?
The game starts in a small suburb close by Boston, there's a family, a husband and a wife. You can change their appearances to look like you or someone you want to and choose to play as a male or female (I spent like an hour just customazing my character). After a short visit from a salesman, an alarm starts buzzing around and evrybody leaves their houses, a nuclear was has begun. Everybody run to the vault but only some of them are authorized to get in, your family is.
Then, you discover they plan to freeze all survivors for some unknown reason. 200 years after the events, you wake up discovering they have kidnapped your son and killed your partner. You must leave the vault to the outworld and try to do everything to find him.
That's the main plot, simple and easy to understand but this game offers much more. There are hundreds of events and different characters you'll meet in that devastated world. While the main missions are entertaining, you'll get lost easily thanks to the inminent freedom Boston offers. A good example is once you step out from the Vault 111; you get directions to go to "Diamond City", a place where most survivors live but in the way to get there I've found like 5 different missions to do, it was up to me to choose if I wanted to ignore them or start them. I decided to help those people and that was like 6 hours of fun and I haven't started the main mission yet!
The world is open wide, maybe not the biggest ever seen in a videogame but there are tons of things to do at every step. If you have played Fallout 3, you know what I'm talking about.
The gameplay is extremely fun, while some RPG elements have been gone (comparing it to Fallout 3) like karma and less dialogue options, the shooting and exploration has been improved, something that needed to be done. It's less role-playing and more action game than before but that's not a bad thing at all, you still have the huge open world map to explore and so many options to choose. There are a few new options, the chance to craft your weapons, to be able to upgrade your armour and the new addition to craft settlements like houses or making a new base. While at first sounds like boring stuff, it's actually very entertaining and fun, you can spend hours making a new house the way you want it.
Like in the previous Bethesda games, you can get in almost every building/house/base/place and interact with every character, you can also get new companions to follow you in the wasteland and even flirt with them. You can even flirt with robots!
You can enter to some buildings with out any loading screen showing up but others may need a little time, like 15 seconds, they're almost unpresent.
The main campaign takes aroung 20 hours to finish but if you count the endless subplots and things you can do and discover, it can go on and on for like 100 hours!
The soundtrack is a big plus, the athmosphere music is great fitting perfectly with the isolated world. But you also have the option to listen to the radio. There are two different stations, one is for classic music and the other one for 40s hits. Just like the previous game, I really love the weird mixing of actions game with old music. The voice acting is great, while the male option feels dry, the female one shows more personality with a more believable feeling.
Now for the let down for some people, graphics. The game doesn't feel like a next-gen running at 30fps (sometimes even at 20fps) and the animation of the characters still doesn't look that great and realistic like other games but, this is a Bethesda game, they have done this same thing in every game. Still, the city of Boston is perfect, feels like a real empty city in this post-apocalyptic era. The day-night cycle looks amazing and the special mention is for the great light effects!
· Graphics (8.0) - Doesn't feel like a next-gen game but the post-apocalyptic atmosphere of Boston really makes it worth it!
· Sound (9.8) - Great sountrack, I could be listening to those beautiful songs all day! Some voice acting could have been done better still...
· Gameplay (9.8) - So much freedom in such a big world filled with so many things to do. Very customizable. I take 0.2 points off because of the RPG elements missing from previous games.
· Story (9.5) - The story is simple but very thrilling thanks to the mistery of the wasteland and the chance to see so many different subplots makes it very playable.
"Fallout 4 may feel like an upgrade from the previous game but thanks to the so many improvements to gameplay and missions makes it feel like a huge reason to forget about everything in your life and just play this. The sountrack is memorable and the graphics may be the only let down but the beautiful post-apocalyptic city of Boston makes it worth it"
