Suicide Squad - Review

Figuring they're all expendable, a U.S. intelligence officer decides to assemble a team of dangerous, incarcerated supervillains for a top-secret mission. Now armed with government weapons, Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc and other despicable inmates must learn to work together. Dubbed Task Force X, the criminals unite to battle a mysterious and powerful entity by the name of Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), who tries to dominate the world while the diabolical Joker (Jared Leto) launches an evil agenda of his own.

Suicide Squad has been a long awaited movie since it was first announced, was the wait worth it? More or less. We get an easy and weak plot with too many characters to introduce but it is a fun ride after all.
The two big stars of "Suicide Squad"

We have already seen that kind of movie, a bad guy shows up and a group of people must join forces to fight and save the planet. But this time we get the bad guys to save humanity, that's what makes it special. While the main cast is a long list, we get to see more from the two real main characters; Deadshot (played by Will Smith in one of his best performances) and Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie, the funniest and most unpredictable character). The rest of the cast gets a fast introduction (like Capt. Boomerang and Killer Croc) while others just show up (like Katana and Slipknot).

There are lots of action sequences and fights, the special effects are actually pretty good (better than expected) but they are nothing new we already seen before. The movie shines thanks to the funny moments between the gang, most of them thanks to Margot Robbie as the Joker's girlfriends; she's unpredictable in a funny way, you cannot expect what she's going to do or say. As said, Will Smith is amazing as well and has some funny and nice moments; we are used to the kind of people he has always performed but this time it's different and that's what makes it better than ever.

The big let down has been the Joker (Jared Leto) for two reasons; I was actually expecting to see more of him by having a bigger role or even the main villian, none of those were a fact. He's more a secondary or even a cameo with a few scenes. The film could have been made without him as we never learn anything about him, he has a couple of scenes looking for Harley and a scene with her getting away from Batman, that's it. The other reason he kinda "sucks" is the way is being made; we had great performances from Jack Nicholson to the great Heath Ledger but Jared Leto misses the point...maybe it's because he doesn't have enough screen time or almost all his scenes were cut out the film, we'll have to wait for the next one to see if he's good enough...

We get many references from "Batman v Superman" as it takes place just after the events of the death of Superman, his death is talked and we even get a couple of scenes with Ben Affleck as Batman chasing the Joker and Harley, fightning Deadshoot and a surprise after credits where we get to see him as Bruce Wayne. There's another unexpected cameo of the Flash but just like his name, he shows up for about 2 seconds.

The soundtrack is amazing, its quite obvious they tried to copy "Guardians of the Galaxy" and its 70s greatest hits. We get great and known songs from the classic "Boheman Rhaspody" of Queen, "Without Me" of Eminem, "Sympathy for the Devil" of The Rolling Stones and "House of the Rising Sun" of The Animals among other big hits.
Another small detail I quite enjoyed was at the very beginning where they introduce the Squad, they way is done is perfectly balanced in a crazy and insane way just like its members. Then the movie changes and becomes the typical action movie.

· What I liked most: Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn shines and makes you laugh the whole time. Will Smith has done one of his best performances. The small references and Batman's cameos.

· What I didn't liked: The Joker is a big failure, I expected more from him. The plot is weak and simple, nothing new we already seen.

Suicide Squad is not the greatest movie ever but it's not the worst like the critics are saying, I really enojoyed it. The plot is weak and has too many characters to introduce but it's a fun pop corn movie with great references from DC Universe, unexpected cameos and great performances from Margot Robbie and Will Smith. Cannot wait what's in store for upcoming sequels and the "Harley Quinn" solo movie!
