Zootopia - Review
Disney has done it once again, Zootopia takes us to a familiar story we've seen before with animals living in a huge modern city.
Set in a parallel universe where humans never existed and animals took the role of intelligent beings living in modern era cities, using phones and taking selfies; a bunny called Judy Hopps dreams on becoming the first bunny police ever. After years of training she has the change of a mysterious case where some animals went missing after becoming wild and started attacking everyone (like animals nowadays). She gets the help of Nick Wilde, a fugitive fox who will put their differences behind to find those disappeared animals.
The movie shows us a typical police action movie where the rokkie cop has to solve an impossible case in 48 hours but in the image of a city where animals live like we humans do. We see them taking the train to work, taking selfies, listening/dancing to music, looking for jobs and so on. This take has been done before in older movies (especially from Disney) but Zootopia shows us a darker face where they get harassed for being different and that kind of feeling conects with the public in a more realistic and emotional way.
We also get some amazing voice acting, from Nick the fox played by Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy the bunny to the more supportive cast like Idris Elba (chief police), Bonnie Hunt (Judy's mom) and the great J.K. Simmons as the major to name a few. All of them were very likeable and funny characters (especially the main duo + the amazing Flash) but I actually had a problem with one character, the popstar named Gazelle (played by Shakira herself), it feels like she doesn't belong in the movie and the only reason that character exists is just for advertising of the singer. This is a Disney movie, it doesn't need any advertising from anyone to get attention.
Something that impressed me was the amazing detail the movie has, it's the best CGI movie I've ever seen and it's thanks to the care of small details.
Zootopia (known Zootropolis in some European countries) has a good plot with developing characters and some of the funniest dialogues I've seen in a long time. Some scenes are memorable like the one we've already seen in the trailer with the slowest sloths ever and the Godfather references which I wasn't expecting at all. There's a serious plot with some thrilling and sad parts but it doesn't get too seriously with itself adding some inside jokes even Disney related jokes from Frozen, The Lion King, Big Hero 6, etc.
A fun and entertaining movie both children and adults will enjoy thanks to the mix of animation and a thrilling and emotional adult plot with an enjoyable plot twist. Very likeable characters that will melt your heart and make you laugh. While it doesn't have the charm of other films like Frozen or Tangled, it's still a great add to the collection worth watching more than once.
· What I liked: The main plot is thrilling filled with feelings. Great and funny references from other films. Perfect dialogue and likeable characters...
· What I didn't like: ...with the exception of one character who didn't fit in at all.
