Doctor Who - Under the Lake Review

Under the Lake feels like a classic Doctor Who episode with a modern and unexpected twist. The Doctor and Clara travel to an underwater mining facility in Scotland at 2119 in a underwater city that was inundated. The place's facing some mysterious events relating an old legend creature; ghosts. The people who die seems to reappear as ghosts for some unknown reasons and those creatures seem to keep trying to kill off everybody so there can be more of them.

The Doctor and the scientist team from the mining facility set up a plan to capture them and see what they can find out. While they succed and the Doctor discovers part of the truth and a message that tells some coordinates (The dark, the sword, the forsaken, the temple). The ghosts escape again and the team gets divided; the Doctor must go back to the past to discover what happened before the flood while Clara stays in the facility waiting for him isolated from the ghosts. But something happens, once the Doctor goes back, a ghost version of him appears in front of Clara and the others, the only explanation something happened in the past and the Doctor was killed...

While the twist will be easy and obvious once we see the second part next week, it's an exciting and totally unexpected ending to see the Doctor as a ghost. There has been always a ghost/dark/afraid double episode in every Doctor since 2005, this time it's for the twelfth. The Doctor clearly doesn't believe in ghosts at the beginning but his mind starts changing after seeing the facts in first hand.

Clearly, a classic Doctor Who tale with some modern elements and the same old Doctor we all love. The ending twist is the best part but the rest of it is as interesting as ever. It may not have that charisma and writting as the first two episodes, but it seems like this season is starting quite strong!

One thing I see they are doing wrong is something from last season; Danny Pink. The man Clara loved so much she would've died just to stay with him. She was heartbroken but now, not even a single word about him. I know the past must stay in the past but she was like talking all the time about him and now it's like he never existed!

Another curious detail; the sonic sunglasses are back. They are not a bad thing but I'm already starting to miss the sonic screwdriver... while I don't want the sunglasses to disappear, I'm still waiting to see a brand-new screwdriver soon...

· Quote of the episode: "Who’s in charge here? I need to know who to ignore"
"They wouldn’t say boo to a goose. More likely they’d give the goose their car keys and bank details"

· Best of the episode: Classic ghost tale and amazing ending twist! - The Doctor and Clara are great as always but...

· Worst of the episode: ... the rest of the cast in forgettable.
