Mortdecai - Review
Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue, Lord Charlie Mortdecai must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.
This comedy film tries to be a mix between Clouseau and Austin Powers but completely misses with one dimensional characters and a dull plot that tries to be entertaining and funny but it only archieves it in a couple of scenes. I haven't read the book but the plot is not interesting at all; a Goya paiting is stolen and a MI5 officer (played by a bored Ewan McGregor) contracts the services of Lord Mortdecai (played by the great Johnny Depp) to find the painting, he's known by his high knowledge of art but I still cannot see why the secret service would hire someone just for that simple reason.
Then we have his assistant (Paul Bettany) who has, like Mortdecai says, a small problem with sex addiction but very useful when fightning against the people who wants to take out his Lord (and they are a lot). Besides all the painting plot, we have a romantic triangle between the main character, his lovely wife Johanna (played by a beautiful woman who never ages Gwyneth Paltrow) and the MI5 agent which, sometimes has a few funny scenes but nothing else.
The acting is good as the entire cast does everything to save the movie, Johnny Deep may have done a few bad movies lately (including this one) but he still does his best as always playing weird characters in the most realistic and lovable way. For the rest of the cast, they're just there doing a good job but nothing else as they cannot do more...
The comedy in this movie is dull, some parts will make you smile while others will make you ask yourself "Is that supposed to be funny?". They tried hard to create a comedy film similar to the classic movies like "The Pink Panther" (the original one from Peter Sellers, of course) but fail quite far away like they did with the updated version of "The Pink Panther" (the one from Steve Martin).
It may have its flaws, but it's not the worst movie ever made if you don't expect that much from it but just to have a nice time having a few laughs.
· What I liked most: The acting is quite good and some scenes will make you smile or laugh a little perhaps.
· What I didn't like: The plot and comedy is dull and everything else of the movie...
