X-Men: Days of Future Past - Review

Rated "S" for "Super-Spoilers". Read at your own risk!

I remember the first time I watched the first X-Men in cinemas...I thought it was amazing and it became one of my favourites movies from that time.
Now, after like 15 years and lots of sequels, prequels and spin-offs, I was actually getting quite tired of this franchise, the first and second movies were great and then the "First Class" film was interesting to see...now, after all this time, a good movie as come!
Best X-Men movie of the franchise!

Starting in a distant future, robots known as Sentinels are exterminating mutants, as well as humans who harbor the genes that lead to mutant offspring. A small band of mutants manages to evade the Sentinels with the assistance of Kitty Pryde, who can project a person's consciousness back in time to deliver warnings. Pryde's group convenes with Storm, Wolverine, Professor Xavier, and Magneto in a monastery. They decide to have Pryde send Wolverine's consciousness back to 1973 to prevent Mystique from murdering Bolivar Trask, the creator of the original Sentinels. The assassination will make Trask a martyr, while Mystique will be captured and her DNA will be used by Trask's followers to create advanced Sentinels that are near-invincible due to their ability to mimic and adapt to mutant powers. Xavier and Magneto advise Wolverine to seek out both of their younger selves for aid.

Wolverine wakes up in 1973 and travels to the X-Mansion, where he encounters Hank McCoy and a drunken Xavier.  Xavier, broken by the failure of his school, his paralysis, Magneto's betrayal, and the departure of his foster sister Mystique, has been abusing a serum which McCoy created to enable him to walk, causing his telepathic powers to be suppressed as well. Wolverine explains his mission and persuades Xavier to help free Magneto. Mystique investigates Trask and discovers he has been capturing and experimenting on mutants. Xavier, Magneto, Beast, and Wolverine fly to Paris to intercept Mystique and arrive as she is about to kill Trask. To ensure that Mystique's DNA can never be used for the Sentinels, Magneto tries to kill her, but with Beast's intervention she flees out.

Although Trask is saved, the world is horrified by the existence of mutants. President Richard Nixon approves Trask's Sentinel program and arranges an unveiling in Washington. Xavier stops taking his serum and slowly regains his mental powers, while losing the ability to walk. Through Wolverine, Xavier speaks to his future self and is inspired to struggle for human-mutant peace once again. He uses Cerebro to track Mystique, who is now heading to Washington.

Nixon unveils the Sentinel prototypes on the White House lawn. Magneto commandeers the Sentinels and attacks the crowd, Nixon and Trask are taken to a safe room, accompanied by the Cabinet, Secret Service officers, and a disguised Mystique. Xavier, Wolverine, and Beast try to stop Magneto, but he impales Wolverine with rebars and throws him into the Potomac River. Meanwhile, in the future, an army of Sentinels attacks the monastery, killing all the mutants. In 1973, Magneto pulls the safe room out of the White House and prepares to kill Nixon. Mystique, disguised as Nixon, shoots Magneto with a plastic gun. Xavier persuades Mystique not to kill Trask and lets her and Magneto flee. Mystique is recognized for saving the President's life, the Sentinel program is canceled, Trask is arrested for selling military secrets, and the dystopian future is averted. Wolverine wakes up at Xavier's school in a new future timeline and finds Iceman, Rogue, Colossus, Pryde, Beast, Storm, Jean Grey, and Cyclops alive.
Hugh Jackman is the face of X-Men and it's nice to see he still
does a great job!

The plot fits great between what we saw in the original trilogy to what there was in the "First Class" film. There are some questions that don't get any answers like "Why does Wolverine has his adamantium claws back in the future?" or "Why does Professor X has the same face and voice if he died?" and "Why does Kitty have the power to send people to the past a few days ago, when and how did she gain that power?". Those questions, as I said, are not answered but it's just a minor detail comparing what the film does fixing everything bad that happened in the second and third films. Jean Grey and Scott don't die, that's enough for me and I really hope to see the entire group again in the next movie!

Probably the best thing from this film is the amazing cast and its acting skills, they're quite good. Must say Hugh Jackman does the perfect Wolverine (he was born to make that character!) and the young versions of Charles Xavier and Magneto played by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender have done a great job like they did in their last movie. The let down has been their future versions from the great and talented Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, they are great actors but their scenes are very short...more like the entire "future" part is short.
The surprises in this film were Quicksilver (by Evan Peters) and the "bad-guy-who-hates-mutants" Dr. Trask (played by the amazing Peter Dinklage). The scenes from Quicksilver were just a couple but they were the highlight of the movie and the funniest ones but once he helps them to free Magneto from prison, they just leave him behind, they could have use them for more scenes, he was great!! And the character from Dinklage was nothing special or surprising...you can cast a great actor but if you put him in a simple role, he would not do much...still great to see him.

It has been good to see the characters from the old movies like Ice-man in action but the best scene was the ending, I loved it! The fact to see Wolverine waking up and seeing all his friends alive again is a new ray of hope that we are going to see more adventures from them!
This film is by far the best X-Men from all but it is not a great as other super-hero films like The Dark Knight, The Avengers or the last Captain America film. The acting is great and the story is superb...

· BEST : The acting is excellent - The story is superb and very entertaining if you enjoy time travelling stories - The change to see actors from both generations together - Quicksilver is the highlight of the movie, his scenes are the best - The entire ending is great, I loved it!

· WORST : Just like 15 minutes of scenes from the future - Quicksilver scenes are just a couple and that's a shame - I really wanted to see more from Stewart and McKellen - Some plotholes never explained - Too much Mystique, she's a great character but the entire film is all about her...

8.8 / 10
