Edge of Tomorrow - Review
This has been a surprise, I knew this film would be entertaining but I wasn't expecting that kind of story Groundhog Day's style. Here's the plot (copied from somewhere else known as Wikipedia):
A race of Aliens called Mimics have taken over continental Europe. William Cage , a member of the NATO-led United Defense Forces, is summoned to London to meet with General Brigham. Brigham communicates the UDF's intention to launch Operation Downfall against the mimics in a D-Day style invasion. He orders Cage to cover combat on the beaches of France to which Cage objects citing a lack of combat training. When Cage tries to blackmail the General, he is stripped of his rank and sent to a forward operating base at Heathrow Airport. Cage meets Master Sergeant Farell (Bill Paxton) and a squad of rejects known as 'J Squad'. Unable to change his predicament, he begrudgingly waits the coming battle.
Cage is dropped in with the first wave - unaware that the Mimics have anticipated the invasion. Cage is attacked by an unusually large "Alpha" Mimic and uses a mine to destroy it but in the process kills himself. As the Mimic falls on Cage its blood douses him, thereby causing Cage to wake up at Heathrow the previous morning. Cage unsuccessfully tries to convince his squad mates that the invasion will fail and everyone will die. Each time he dies he wakes up the previous morning. In one such loop he saves Sergeant Rita Vrataski, she recognizes Cage's ability to anticipate events and tells him to find her when he "wakes up".
This time, Tom Cruise will be an insecure man who thinks all the time he's in the wrong place, it is a nice change... |
Cage finds Vrataski and explains that they know each other from the future invasion. Vrataski confides in Cage that she too possessed the ability to reset but the ability was lost after receiving a blood transfusion. Vrataski takes Cage to see Dr. Carter, a former government scientist and expert in Mimic biology. The doctor explains to Cage the situation he finds himself in. Vrataski tells Cage that he will begin to experience "visions" of the alien's hive mind called the Omega. Cage eventually sees in a vision the Omega is located in a Bavarian Alps dam. Vrataski decides to train Cage in combat. With each subsequent loop his combat proficiency increases.
Feeling the fight is pointless, Cage decides not to meet Vrataski and instead goes to London. In an near empty pub Cage berates patrons for believing the operation will be a success to which they label him a coward. Cage then witnesses the Mimic's true plan: a large scale amphibious assault on London while Operation Downfall forces are destroyed. After Cage is killed in London, Vrataski and Cage work on a plan to make it off the beach. After countless loops they make their way inland towards the Omega.
In the next loop Cage decides to go kill the Omega by himself but when he arrives at the dam he is ambushed by an Alpha who tries to drain his blood to prevent him from resetting the day. Cage manages to kill himself by drowning underneath damaged water pipes. During the next loop Cage tells Vrataski and Carter that his vision was just a trick to trap him and take away his ability to reset. Vrataski forces Carter to explain to Cage that during Carter's employment at Whitehall, General Brigham supervised the construction of a prototype transponder. Carter states the device can theoretically ascertain the location of the Omega if injected into an Alpha Mimic or someone with the reset ability. Vrataski and Cage infiltrate the Ministry of Defense and threaten to kill Brigham unless he gives them the transponder. Brigham relents and hands over the transponder but then has them attacked by troops.
While in pursuit, Vrataski stabs Cage's leg with the transponder. Cage "sees" that the Omega is actually located under the Louvre in Paris. After crashing, Cage wakes and realizing he had a blood transfusion feels he has lost the ability to reset the day. After breaking out Cage convinces members from J squad to join their effort to destroy the Omega. On their flight to Paris they are attacked by Mimics and crash. Surviving members of the squad sacrifice themselves to buy Vrataski and Cage time. With great effort both make it beneath the Louvre where they are hunted by an Alpha. Vrataski uses herself as a distraction and is subsequently killed. Near the Omega the Alpha attacks and mortally wounds Cage but not before he is able to prime and release a grenade belt that falls into the Omega and detonates, effectively killing it and all Mimics.
The character of Emily Blunt will be really likeable thanks to her bad-ass personality who doesn't mind to kill Cruise's character a hundred times |
As the Omega disintegrates Cage's body absorbs its blood and he wakes up en route to his initial meeting with Brigham the day before. Cage attends a press conference where Brigham announces that the Mimics have been defeated. Major Cage, having never been stripped of his rank, visits Vrataski at the Heathrow base. She asks him what he wants to which Cage smiles and laughs happily.
Now the plot, as you can read, has a lot of stuff happening and, while watching the movie, you even don't know how many times he repeats the same day in total. At first I tought it was going to be like too repeating but it ended up being quite funny, some of the days ended before or after for some surprising events that happen, some of them were very unexpected and funny. Aside all the timey wimey repeating day stuff it is quite interesting to see how it's going to end and to see the differences from all the repeated days you see and I kinda liked the ending, also unexpected and "funny". The entire plot is very well done and makes an enjoyable movie to watch.
Tom Cruise is the main character (a very unknown actor), he's famous for his action movies with impossible stunts and this film is no exception. After making tooooo many films he still gets it but instead of his typical hero character, we see him here like an amateur who has never been in a fight and that's a nice change that he does perfectly and believable. We also have the second protagonist of the movie played by Emily Blunt, who does a great job as a bad-ass sergeant (she kinda reminds me to Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII), you can see here the great actress she is if you remember her from "The Devil Wears Prada". The rest of the cast doesn't show up that much but they still do a great job.
The movie may have some plot-holes but it has a well told story and very exciting action scenes while makes you wonder how it will end, some people will say "Really, are you kidding me?" but some other, like me, would say "That's a funny twist".
· BEST : Plot very well done - Interesting to watch until the end - Tom Cruise does a great job as always - Emily Blunt's a great action star - The funny bits
· WORST : The action scenes are too simple, nothing new if you compare it to other movies - The "aliens" have a very ugly design - Makes you wonder other possibilities for the end - Supporting cast/characters are very one dimenson...
