The Desolation of Smaug - Review
I'm going to be honest here, I didn't like the Lord of the Rings movies that much...yes, I've watched all of them more than twice but I think it had too many fighting scenes and most of them looked too similar, the only thing I liked of them was the story and different plots of them. The it came the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey where it's a more quiet film with more adventures than killing but it was a little deception (unless the scene of riddles between Bilbo and Gollum!) and then it came the second part of The Hobbit called greatly "The Desolation of Smaug" and I have to say I really enjoyed it even more than the original Ring's Trilogy! It's true that it doesn't have that amazing story or so many secondary characters with their own stories or those high-scale action scenes with thousands of orcs but I personally like these new trilogy even more for the
different adventures the fellowship has and for the main story that while it's a lot easier it is quite exciting!
Mild Spoilers!!! The movie follows the ending of the last film, they keep running from the white orc white Bilbo still has the infamous ring stolen from Gollum, they enter to the dark forest where there are a group of Wood Elves living there including the known elf Legolas (who's even more badass in this film) and a new character that doesn't appear in the book called Tauriel, a she-elf who falls in love with one of the dwarves and tries to help them in any way...now, she wasn't very welcome in the movie as she's a new character but I actually liked her, she steals every scene she appears and it's also very hot (everything has to be said). The entire sequence in the forest with the elves and some giant spiders is very entertaining and fun to watch. Then they arrive to an old town that reminded me to Venice (just kidding) with a corrupt governor who only decides to help them because of the treasure the dragon guards. Now is when the movie becomes good...they arrive to the Lonely Mountain and find Smaug, the dragon, sleeping and filled with gold and treasures until Bilbo wakes him while he tries to find the Arkenstone using the ring to become invisible and then a great verbal fight starts until the rest of the group with Thorin enters into the mountain and make a plan to kill Smaug once and for all but it fails and that only makes the dragon angrier and decides to destroy the city of the lake (the one that looks like Venice). The dragon says his famous words "I am fire, I am death!" then Bilbo says "What have we done?" while he sees Smaug flying and getting ready to attack and the movie ends right there.
The ending actually makes you want to watch more as it ends in a unexpected way but we'll have to wait a whole year to see the last part of the trilogy. The movie is a lot better than its predecessor but it may not be liked by some hardcore fans from The Lord of the Rings but I actually found it better as I said before. The entire adventure is fun to watch and many different things happen to the protagonists plus the entire scene with the Wood Elves plus the entire part where Smaug appears is amazing. The highlight of the movie is Smaug, played perfectly by the great Benedict Cumberbatch, it's the greatest dragon I've ever seen in a film and I think it's even better than the digital creation of Gollum.
The acting from the rest of the cast is excellent, Ian McKellen is great as Gandalf, as always, plus Martin Freeman is even better than in the last film as Bilbo while the rest does a good job like in the last film. Orlando Bloom was a surprise seeing him again as Legolas and the new elf Tauriel is greatly played by Evangeline Lilly, she steals the movie along with Mr. Cumberbatch!
· What I liked are the different adventures they get plus the entire ending with Smaug in every scene while he talks and breaths fire. The entire cast is amazing and the dragon is perhaps one of the greatest CGI characters every created!
· What I didn't like is that still has the slow way to tell the story like in the last one as they are making three movies out of a single book plus I actually didn't like the way the film ended...but still is quite an amazing movie!
1. Star Trek Into Darkness (9.5)
2. The Day of the Doctor (9.5)
3. Frozen (9.4)
4. The Desolation of Smaug (9.0)
5. Iron Man 3 (8.7)
6. Thor: The Dark World (8.5)
Tauriel has been a nice surprise as she always looks good in every scene she appears. |

Smaug himself is the best of the film without doubt, you'll enjoy every scene he appears played perfectly by Benedict Cumberbatch |
