Star Trek Beyond - Review
After docking at Starbase Yorktown, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, ventures into new dangerous uncharted territory. There, the Enterprise is destroyed by a new ruthless enemy with a deep hatred of the Federation, and strands Kirk and his crew on a remote planet with no means of communication. Kirk must then work with the elements to reunite his crew and get back to save Starbase Yorktown from this dangerous menace.
Set a couple of years after "Star Trek into Darkness", Kirk and his crew are back in this adventure where they must face his deadlest enemy yet. While we don't get anything about what happened in the previous film, no mentions about Khan neither about Carol Marcus, who joined their crew at the end of the film but she disappears from this one with no explanation.
While the previous movies were more about the origins of the characters with a more dark tone and serious plot, this one is all about having fun with an unexpected mission where the Enterprise is destroyed. That scene is actually spectacular with the best CGI I've seen in a while. We have more screentime from Kirk and Spock but we get to see more from two favourite characters from the public; McCoy (Karl Urban) and Scotty (Simon Pegg), while they had very little to do in the previous movies, they shine all the way here.
It's nice to see the entire cast again, we get a new villian named Krall (Idris Elba) but feels short compared to the ones from previous films, he gets the typical guy-who-seeks-for-revenge story.
We also get a new heroine, an alien named Jaylah (played by Sofia Boutella), who fits great with the crew but I don't think we'll see more from her in upcoming films.
Special effects are at top, the part where the Enterprise is destroyed and the entire ending sequence with that "classic music" is breathtaking! Not only that but the change to see them in a more relaxing mission not taking itself too serious is a nice change of tone. Still, I kinda miss the dark tone the previous films had.
